Organize

to form into a coherent unity or functioning whole

– to arrange by systematic planning and united effort (Merriam-Webster)

I must confess. I get it wrong pretty often. I fell into the dis-organized category this week. I failed to get this written on my pre-defined deadline. If I had been more organized with my time, I most certainly would have completed it. Contemplating this has reminded me that organization is key to my level of success. Couple that with the discipline to follow through on commitments and my world will most certainly transition, reflecting both outer and inner alignment and creating “a coherent unity.” When I set myself up to win with organizing my time, my things, and my mind, I accomplish so much more than when I am in the spin of self-created confusion, doubt, and uncertainty. Organization is a key principle here at Declutterfy Your Life and one that is woven into the fabric of all the healthy changes we create in our lives.

Physical Spaces– Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world. Tending to the spaces in your home cultivates a sense of order and control, and when you feel those things, you are much more likely to want to take care of yourself, eat healthy, work out, and maybe start that creative venture you have always wanted to begin!

It’s motivating when you start the day off with a clean desk or kitchen sink.

It’s why one of the greatest tips is to make your bed first thing in the morning. That way, at the end of the day, no matter how good or bad the day was, you are welcomed into a nicely made bed. I like to think of making your bed as a small daily gift to your future self.

So where do you start? You always hold the power to choose what is right for you, but I suggest beginning with the low-hanging fruit first to gather some momentum.

What areas would be the easiest to clean up to get quick results that you would see daily? This could be the bathroom sink and drawers since you use that space daily. You could choose your bedside table or dresser top.

The idea is to organize a space that you will get gratification often from seeing it and that reinforces the pleasure you receive from organizing.

Here are a list of ideas for easy, satisfying wins:

Clean all your mirrors

Organize bathroom drawer

Put away dishes

Make your bed immediately after getting up

Organize linens/towels

Clean all sinks

Organize dresser top/nightstand

Organize desk drawer

Fold/Hang all clothes and put away

Clean microwave & stove top

Organize tupperware

Organize/clean refrigerator door

Organize loose garage tools

Organize/clean vehicle center console & glove box

Share your progress below and what you have learned about yourself as you organize these areas! The small habits and changes will accumulate over time. Stick with it and experience the transformation!

Mental Space– Spending time organizing your thoughts and emotions may be some of the most difficult work you ever do. The emotionally laden brain can be wildly off-base, throw fits, and lead us away from what you truly want. It means well, but it really doesn’t like change or discomfort, both of which come with organization.

Knowing this going in, you can prepare for the obstacles. Scheduling your to-dos and important tasks can give you the freedom, order, and outcomes you seek. (Look for more about this next week as I share much greater detail on how to prioritize your time.)

For now just know that organizing your hours, days, and weeks are integral in tackling the task of decluttering.

Decide what you want to accomplish.

Schedule when you will do it.

Follow through when the time comes.

Final Thoughts on Organize

I hope you spend time this week organizing your time in order to organize your things. Another quick tip is organizing things based on size, type, or color. This is really effective when organizing your clothes.
