Times of transition are defining moments in our lives. The decisions we make in these moments change the trajectory of our lives, sometimes for the best and sometimes to our own detriment. The most difficult transitions are the ones of tragedy that are outside of our control that catch us off balance, such as losing a loved one suddenly or getting fired from a job. These events can feel like you’ve been flipped on your head and don’t know which direction to go. There are other types of transitions though that I am going to focus on today. The purposeful types. The ones both big and small that you actively choose. Mastering the art of self-transitions will completely change your life and give you agency over your life.
Physical Spaces– The act of decluttering is transitioning. You are changing the physical arrangement of your things both by removing the items from your home and/or tidying the items into their proper places. While it can be agonizing during the transition, it is extremely satisfying to experience the results.
It takes lots of energy to accomplish these tasks so it is important to celebrate the small wins along the way. I know you may be thinking it’s not a big deal because the full transformation is not complete.
Do not let those defeating thoughts distract you.
This is completely normal for your brain to discount the effort and point out how much farther you still have to go. If you experience this, keep looking at the positive transitions you are making and stay focused on each decision that brings you closer to your decluttering goal.
Mental Space– Your mind is where you can make the greatest transitions and harness your full power to transform yourself and your outer world.
This statement is not just a cool billboard quote. Think about it. If you walk through your day complaining about your home and doing nothing about it, you are just reaffirming that you are helpless to change it. Change those thoughts to, “I am capable of decluttering and transforming my space” and you can’t help but follow through with actions of decluttering. Plus, your eyes will start to look for the easy wins. To find a list of great places to start, click here.
When you learn to re-frame your thoughts and control them rather than have them run wild and free, you will see how much power you truly have in changing your life.
One of the beautiful things about this process is that after you get started in one area of your life, you will be able to apply the same thought transitions to other areas. As you purposefully transition and redirect your thoughts to beneficial thoughts, you will experience that you have control over yourself, your environment, your relationships, and your self-confidence will increase as well. It has a beautiful synergistic effect!
