Quick Tip #2 – Clean One Space

Reading Time: 2 minutes

That’s all it takes to start experiencing the power and freedom from our clutter. We can easily convince ourselves that a small space will have no effect on our mental state and our surroundings. But just as clutter breeds more clutter, the same is true for cleanliness. There is a tipping point at which the clutter will give way to the cleaner spaces. At that point, our things have less of a grasp on our mind and energy.

My suggestion is to try it out. Start with one small space, whether it be a dresser or the bathroom sink. Or how about the shoe rack. Choose an area that you see or utilize everyday. This will give you the most positive feedback and increase the likelihood of it making a lasting impact.

After you have cleaned up that space, the next step isn’t cleaning another space, but to really appreciate the newly clutter-free area. Really notice your thoughts around the space. Are you experiencing judgmental thoughts like. “Why did I wait so long to do this?” “It’s ridiculous how much energy I wasted on waiting to clean that up or complaining about how it looked.” “I wonder how long until it’s dirty again?”

Please do not worry. You are totally normal in thinking this way. And to be frank…Why would you think anything different? This is how you have always thought and it contributes to the re-occurring clutter battle. Now is your chance to change your thoughts about this space, so you can create the habit of keeping the space tidy.

The best thing you can do when you find yourself thinking these judgmental thoughts, is to just be with the thought. I know, that sounds really pointless. If you can trust in this process, you will find the other side of these limiting thoughts. Stay curious about your thoughts. Actively make a decision about whether it serves you to continue thinking this way. Ask “Does my future self think this way about my clean spaces?” If the answer is “No”, then compassionately let the thought go and insert your new thoughts about your clean space. You can use these if you can’t think of your own yet.

“Wow, I love the look of that space so much more now.”

“If this space brings me so much calm, then I can definitely see the value clearing the clutter all around me.”

“This is my first place of sanctuary in my home.”

“This is proof I can live a less cluttered life!”

When choosing your new thought, it is important to not just straight to the most positive one, but find the thought that is believable to you right now AND moves you in the direction of your future self.
